The Vermont Canoe Vision
Rob and Amy Scharges had a vision of reviving the art of canoe building in Vermont's Mad River Valley, former home of Mad River Canoe. In a barn just 150 yards from the Mad River, the couple established Vermont Canoe & Kayak in 2003, enlisting veteran Mad River Canoe craftsmen to oversee production. The first model, the 16-foot Encore, hit the icy waters of the Mad in March 2004. Vermont Canoe introduced two new models for 2006, the Tupper, an Adirondack-style pack boat, and the Sokoki, a beamy sport canoe designed by Jim Henry. For 2009, the in-demand solo favorite, the "Indy" is back. Currently, Vermont Canoe is constructing the mold for the 18' foot Horizon, another Jim Henry classic.

The INDY Specifications:
A pleasure to paddle, the Indy carries good hull speed and is maneuverable when leaned. The narrow, low design is well-suited to a "sit and switch" style of paddling and is less susceptible to wind. There's good cargo capacity for the solo paddler, and the sophisticated hull is a variation of the Shallow-V that nearly transitions into a shallow arch amidships for outstanding solo performance. Slight tumblehome at the paddling station means even easier paddling while flared ends keep the canoe dry.
